World coronavirus mortality nearly doubled in 3 months. Almost a fifth of global deaths occurred in Jan 2021. America’s average Covid death toll is running at 3,300 per day. 178,000 Covid deaths in just 2 months, December & January, in the USA. February’s daily deaths are even higher than January’s in the USA. German Covid mortality’s slowly declining again, now under 700 a day from 800 in mid-January. Post-Christmas coronavirus deaths spiked at around 6,000 a week in Germany. One week into Feb, Germany’s still feeling its fatal Covid hangover from Christmas. After reaching a shocking daily average of 1,200, UK Covid mortality has declined to 985 per day. The last 2 weeks of Jan were deadly in the UK. 17,000 people paid the ultimate price for Christmas. Horrendous January deaths in the UK. Covid mortality’s still above 1,000 per day. French coronavirus deaths have been steady at around 400 per day all month. A bad winter, but France avoided a post-Christmas spike in Covid deaths. Winter’s pressures on the health system showed in France’s difficulty in keeping mortality numbers updated. Italy’s daily deaths are steadily reducing across the month. A tough winter, but Italians avoided a Christmas spike. November – January doubled Italy’s Covid death toll, similar to the UK & France. The Spanish rate of daily deaths has doubled over the past 4 weeks. Spain narrowly avoided a post-New Year spike. Spain’s struggling to keep the virus under control. Canadian daily deaths are falling back quickly after a startling Christmas increase. Canadians’ lack of interest in Christmas activity controls had inevitable consequences. Canada’s Covid fatalities rose quickly in Dec-Jan but are now declining. Dutch daily deaths are settling back down after a high in Dec/Jan. Winter has doubled the Dutch pandemic death toll. Dutch overall mortality isn’t bad for Europe; it looks to be on the decline after January’s high. Belgian coronavirus fatalities have declined through Jan-Feb 2021. Belgium suffered a worrying steep increase in pandemic mortality through Nov-Dec 2020. Belgium’s Covid mortality fell during January, and continues to decline. Portugal’s horrible rise in daily Covid mortality shows no sign of slowing. Massive January spike in pandemic mortality for Portugal. Portugal’s November to January deaths come to four times the March to October total! Sweden’s patchy reporting makes it hard to see short-term trends. Covid mortality seems to be declining. Steep post-Christmas increases in Swedish Covid mortality are now falling off. Large adjustments to Dec, Jan figures suggest difficulty keeping up with elevated mortality. Only a slight hint of a decline in Austrian daily deaths so far. Shocking pandemic mortality increases through Nov-Dec 2020. Numbers are still high for Austria. Jan-Feb deaths were reduced, but still very high for Austria. Swiss daily deaths are reducing into February. Breathtaking Swiss mortality increase from November through January. Swiss pandemic fatality rates are now falling, but are still at April’s level. Daily deaths are still quite high for Denmark, but reducing quickly. The Christmas season doubled Denmark’s coronavirus death toll, but it remains relatively low. February’s Covid death toll is shaping up to look like April’s in Denmark. 2 Finns a day died from Covid last week. Nov-Jan saw 313 deaths in Finland, almost half their pandemic total but still impressively low. Finland’s slight Christmas coronavirus hangover is tailing off. 110 coronavirus deaths in 4 weeks was quite high for Norway. The Christmas season brought a modest elevation in Norway’s already tiny numbers. The pandemic has only increased Norway’s mortality by 1%. Ireland’s daily deaths are still climbing. Ireland’s Christmas spike in Covid mortality came close to their Spring peak. Irish coronavirus deaths are still increasing into February. Luxembourg’s coronavirus deaths are struggling to settle below 2 per day. Christmas in Luxembourg nearly tripled their Covid death toll. Following a bad Christmas, Covid-19 has added 14% to Luxembourg’s usual mortality.
